The UK Government has an amibitious target of building 300,000 new homes per year. How is the industry reacting?

New Build Completions

Data from the Office for National Statistics show that the number of new dwellings completed in 2018 was 198,040. The majority of these were privately built (160,730 – 81%), followed by Housing Association (33,300 – 17%), with the rest built by Local Authorities (4,010 – 2%).

Net Additional Dwellings

On 26 November 2020, MHCLG published its report on housing supply in England up to 2020. This showed that in 2019-2020 there were 243,770 net additional dwellings in England, with new build making up 90% of this at 220,600. The remainder (combined as ‘Other’ in the graphs below) comprise change of use, conversions, demolitions and other minor gains.

Affordable Housing Supply

Based on MHCLG data, the chart below shows affordable housing supply from 1991-2020 in England, based on tenure. Total affordable supply reached 57,644 units in 2019-2020.
